The American Legion is the nation’s largest and most powerful organization of U.S. wartime veterans and their families. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, wartime veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. We are a not-for-profit community service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
Since its inception in 1919, The American Legion has delivered substantial improvements for veterans, families and communities. The Legion ushered in the modern VA as well as drafted and drove home passage of the GI Bill and the Post- 9/11 GI Bill. The American Legion works every day on behalf of all U.S. servicemen and women. It is recognized as a national leader in transition assistance from military to civilian life, providing resources for careers, education opportunities, child care and more.
No one does more for American service men and women or veterans than The American Legion. We ensure that our active
duty military gets the proper equipment and training they need to conduct effective missions. We ensure that our men and women of the armed forces past, present and future get the square deal they've earned, whether it is medical care, education & housing benefits and so much more. The American Legion Members have strength in numbers, numbers that are upwards of 2.4 Million nationwide.
That's a loud voice, a voice that demands what's right for our veterans and military.
The Florida American Legion, with more than 130,000 members and 300 Posts throughout the state, supports our military and their families in a variety of ways. In 2012, the Florida American Legion:

• Contributed over 30,000 volunteer hours and $240,000 in aid to more than 5,000 veterans and wounded warriors in the VA system
• Sponsored 330 students for the Florida Boys State youth leadership program at a cost of more than $135,000
• Collected more than 2,500 pints of blood for the Red Cross
• Sponsored 950 Boy Scouts and contributed over $43,000 in donations
• More than 4,500 Legion Rider participants rode 1,650,170 miles and collected over $326,000 in support of veteran support programs
• Donated more than $303,000 to the Children and Youth Fund
• Awarded 1,400 School Medals, 552 JROTC Medals and over $77,000 in scholarships
This is just a sample of what the American Legion accomplishes year after year. In addition to our state wide programs and charities each individual Post supports and participates in its local community in countless ways.
The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.
